Happy... joyful... peaceful... festive? Greetings!

It has become somewhat controversial as to what you wish people at this time of year. We are so used to saying Happy Christmas and marking the birth of a holy child as well as filling the holiday period with gifts, songs and masses of food and drink while spreading the myth that most of this is down to a jolly fat man called Santa Claus. I am mindful that in ancient times, it was the Pagans who created the beginings of all this indulgence. A Yule log of great size was apparently obtained in order to keep a fire burning for as long as possible and all doors and windows blocked to keep out icy drafts. No wonder any benefactor bearing goodies had to come in down the chimney! Stores of food would, no doubt, be consumed along with copious drink in order to keep spirits high during the long dark days of winter. I've heard that mistletoe was ingested in some form or other as it possessed contraceptive properties. [I wonder why that was needed!]
So how we got from that to the birth of one of the most influential and selfless beings in the history of humankind, I'm not sure. I'm not religious but I do believe that this man existed and that his message was hugely important. There have been others, of course... all with similar messages. I do wonder if mankind had a hand in twisting the facts to suit their own needs. Was Jesus actually
born on the 25th December. I've heard that was not the case but does it matter? Surely, it is the sentiment of Christmas and Yule that is important... to try and accept each other and love our differences, forgive our failings and celebrate the abundance of joy in our lives. So, I'm happy with whatever greeting is used - including 'happy holidays' which is, at least inclusive to all beliefs and shouldn't offend anyone.
